Periodontal
disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria
in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your
teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.
We do routine treatment like scaling
and root polishing as part of the oral prophylaxis regime. This is
always followed by polishing of the teeth to get rid of stains and to
make the teeth smooth so as to prevent plaque accumulation.
Also, the patients are educated about the brushing techniques as well as maintenance of oral hygiene.
Specialized gum treatment like flap
surgery and curettage are indicated when there are periodontal pockets
and bone loss around the teeth , which may lead to mobility or shaking
of teeth. Esthetic contouring of the gum may be done to enhance the
esthetics if there is excessive gum display on smiling.
Front teeth with recession or shrunk
gums where the neck of the teeth is seen on smiling can also be
corrected surgically to enhance the esthetics.
